Thank Goodness for Community Partners

CoServ LogoAs the winter reluctantly gave way to spring, many families in north Collin County feared the arrival of the utility bills. It seemed the furnaces could get no rest. But Community Lifeline Center and the regions utility providers came through to help local residents in need.

Three special Utility Assistance Days were announced. On February 25 and March 25, a total of 50 families received assistance in meeting their costs with TXU Energy — over $19,000 in assistances, to be more specific. And on March 11, 15 families received nearly $6,000 in help from CoServ. In total, sixty-five families received $24,954.94 in help from TXU Energy and CoServ.

Both providers sent representatives to the Community Lifeline Center on these days to meet with clients previously screened by the CLC as eligible for benefits. Appointments were scheduled in advance, and clients brought the requested documentation to present to the representatives. They may have arrived with concerns about meeting their expenses, but they left with smiles of relief. CLC is most grateful for all community partners, and these two utility providers are especially appreciated at this time.

Claire Smith, who recently turned seven,  asked her friends to bring food items instead of presents to her party so she and her family could donate them to people in need. When asked why she decided to do this, Claire said “I enjoyed helping people who didn’t have enough food, and I hope they are happy now.” After her birthday party her father Chad Smith loaded the car with all of the collected food and dropped it off at Community Lifeline Center. Our thanks to Claire and her family for their generosity!

Fourth Annual Tucker Hill Toy Drive

CLC was selected this year as the 2014 receipient of the annual Tucker Hill Toy Drive. Residents of Tucker Hill signed up to provide toys for the children who would be attending the CLC Christmas Reception at Trinity Presbyterian Church. This year the Tucker Hill Toy Drive collected 182 toys which they delivered to Trinity Presbyterian Church for the toy room. Jessica Contreras who organized and coordinated the toy drive said “Our neighbors are especially thankful for all their blessings at such a joyous time of year. We love to pass those blessings on to other neighbors in need.” She also noted that the Tucker Hill developer, Southern Land Company, made a $200 donation to CLC to help support their efforts.

CLC Adopt-A-Family Reception

CLC ADOPT-A-FAMILY RECEPTION

Thank you to all of the donors who adopted a CLC family or an individual—your gifts not only made the children’s faces light up, but also gave their parents a moment of relief from financial strain. The December 16 reception at Trinity Presbyterian Church was a magical event, with holiday treats, entertaining activities for the children, and a toy room where the parents could select special toys for their children. CLC Case Manager Delphia Adeogun commented that many of the people who attended seemed overwhelmed and simply kept saying “Thank you” to the staff and volunteers.

We also want to thank all of the wonderful volunteers from Trinity Presbyterian who organized the event. Jen Zaccarella, a volunteer from the Giving Tree Planning Committee at Trinity Presbyterian Church, said “We were so happy to be able to help and hopefully provide a warm, caring atmosphere for the families at the reception, and I’m so glad that everyone enjoyed it!”

It’s A Match!

Community Lifeline Center’s end-of-the-year appeal raised $7,410 by December 31, meeting the $5,000 1:1 challenge grant, for a grand total of $12,410! We are so grateful to board member Tony Forsythe (NPC, LLC) for the grant, which made this year’s end-of-the-year campaign the most successful in CLC’s history.

And what a year it’s been! Here are the preliminary figures for 2014 showing CLC’s growth over the past two years:

Emerson Hosts Laundry Detergent Collection Drive Contest

CLC staff members and volunteers picked up 437 boxes of laundry detergent collected by employees of Emerson Process Management in McKinney. The collection drive was a contest to see which of the six employee teams could collect the most boxes! As you can see below, this is one of several cars completely filled with detergent.

Giving it all in 61 days?

Imagine trying to manage your finances if 50% of your income was paid from the end of October to the end of December? You’d feast over the holidays, but scramble the other 304 days of the year.

That’s what charitable organizations like CLC face. Because according to a variety of studies, including a recent Guide Star study, over half of all charitable organizations receive the majority of their donations from October to the end of the year. 36% of non-profits get 25% to 49% of their charitable contributions between October and the end of the year. 16% get over half of their total annual contributions over that roughly 61 day period.
